AMHERST, WI (WSAU) — The subject of a lengthy standoff that led to a shelter-in-place order in Amherst has been found dead.
Portage County Sheriff Mike Lukas says 32-year-old Jeffery Miller was deceased inside the Amherst home where he had been barricaded for nearly 24 hours. Miller had been wanted on several outstanding warrants.
The shelter-in-place order was lifted at approximately 5 PM Friday when officers confirmed that Miller’s body had been found inside the home by a special response team. A cause of death has not been released, though the State Department of Justice-Division of Criminal Investigation has taken over as the lead investigator for the incident.
No officers fired their weapons during the standoff, though reports indicate that some shots were fired at the officers. Despite that, no officers were injured during the standoff.
Officers deployed several tactics while Miller was holed up inside the home, including cutting power to the residence.
Miller was wanted in Sauke County in connection with an attempted homicide. Officers say they tried to pull him over for a moving violation last Tuesday, instead he led them on a high-speed chase that ended when he crashed. He then fired at officers before running off.
Officers learned he was hiding in the home on Thursday and special response teams from mutiple counties were called in to secure the perimiter. A shelter-in-place order was also issued, with officers warning residents to stay inside and away from windows.
