AMHERST, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin Department of Justice has confirmed that the suspect in last week’s day-long standoff near Amherst died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Jeffrey E. Miller was found dead in the attic of a home on Mill Avenue on Friday evening, ending the standoff which included several rounds of gunfire at officers from Miller’s position. During the standoff, officers cut power to the home and used gas to try to get Miller to surrender peacefully, but he refused.
When officers made their way into the home they found Miller’s deceased body next to a gun.
No officers fired their weapons during the standoff.
Investigators also confirmed that Miller was wanted in connection with an incident from Tuesday, July 23rd in Sauk County, where he was accused of shooting and injuring a police officer following a high-speed chase. He’s then accused of fleeing the scene and meeting up with a man, identified as Edward Deyo, who took him to the Amherst home.
Deyo and four others are expected to appear in court today to face potential charges for aiding a felon.
