GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – The Green Bay Packers will have a new kicker in 2024, as the team announced that Anders Carlson will not be on the 53-man roster this season.
ESPN’s Rob Demovsky was the first to report that Carlson would not be making the cut after he struggled throughout training camp, which ended with him missing a 32-yard field goal attempt late in their final preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday.
Carlson, a 6th-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, made 27 of 33 field goals and 34 of 39 extra points during the regular season. On kicks 40 yards or longer, Carlson was just 7-of-12 while leading the NFL with five missed extra points in 2023.
On Tuesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter also reported that Samori Toure, a seventh-round selection in 2022, will not be making the team this season after appearing in 22 games and hauling 13 receptions for 160 yards over his first two NFL seasons. The Packers have had a competitive battle throughout training camp between receivers Grant DuBose and Malik Heath, who both played well in the team’s three preseason games, so the releasing of Toure likely signals that or possibly both will make the 53-man roster.
Meanwhile, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Packers have cut both backup quarterbacks Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt after the team acquired former Titans quarterback Malik Willis on Monday afternoon. Clifford and 7th-round pick Michael Pratt have been competing to be Jordan Love’s backup through training camp, with both struggling to consistently move the ball. Clifford completed just 42.9% of his passes this preseason, throwing just one touchdown pass during the team’s three preseason games, while Pratt completed 65.7% of his passes and also threw just one touchdown. A report from Bill Huber at Sports Illustrated indicated that the Packers hope to bring Clifford back on the practice squad over Pratt, whom they would let sign elsewhere.
According to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic and Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated, the Packers are also cutting offensive tackle Caleb Jones and tight end Joel Wilson, who could be re-signed to the team’s practice squad later this week, while Iola native Kristian Welch was also cut and could be brought back as another practice squad player. Schneidman further reported that both offensive tackles Kedeem Telfort and Travis Glover have both made the 53-man roster, while guard Royce Newman has been released.
