Wausau’s Economic Development Committee is scheduled to hear an update on the proposed green indoor space, natural produce market, and mocktail bar on Wausau Avenue.
Plans for the space were first approved in June 2022 but according to Tuesday’s agenda plans have stalled. Owners Matthew and Kristen Aschbrenner have told the city that they have run into issues with the building’s condition, requiring significantly more than their original $250,000 proposal.
The Aschbrenners estimate that improvement will require nearly $750,000 to address all structural issues. They have not received funding from the city for the improvements, and no city funding is being requested at this time.
Tuesday’s discussion is being prompted by a clause in the development agreement that allows the city to buy back the property if the business is not ready for occupancy by this summer. The Aschbrenners were given one extension on the completion date last summer. They’ll request another during the meeting, saying “we have had strong interest and excitement from the community requesting the use of our building and would love to see our small business flourish.”
They have told the city they may be ready for a soft opening in November if construction timelines hold up. To see their request and their previous proposal, click here.
Tuesday’s meeting begins at 5:30 at City Hall following a Parks and Rec Committee meeting.
