MADISON, WI (WSAU) – For a second straight week the Wisconsin Badgers found themselves in a close game into the fourth quarter, until pulling away for a 27-13 win over South Dakota.
Running back Chez Mellusi’s grandfather died on Friday, something he didn’t tell his coaches until after Saturday’s game. He ran for two touchdowns and 60-yards. “I didn’t want any sympathy,” Mellusi said. “I need to do a better job letting my guys know what I’m going through. That’s on me.”
Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke was 17-of-27 for 214 yards and one touchdown.
Wisconsin jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but South Dakota won the thrid, and got within 17-13 before the Badgers pulled away.
Wisconsin improves to 2-0 and hosts Alabama next Saturday in Madison. Then Wisconsin has a bye week before traveling to California to play USC.
