GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – With Malik Willis being named the starter for the Packers’ home opener against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, the team is not expecting to need the services of a free-agent veteran quarterback despite recent rumors.
According to the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Packers have not reached out to Ryan Tannehill or other free agent quarterbacks due to the team expecting Jordan Love to return from his sprained MCL injury sooner than the initial three- to six-week timeframe.
Willis, a former teammate of Tannehill, spent two seasons playing 11 games for the Tennessee Titans and was acquired by the Packers for a seventh-round pick. Sean Clifford, who served as Love’s backup last season, is still on the practice squad and is expected to be elevated for Week Two.
