PRAIRIE DU CHEIN, WI (WSAU) – Two Wisconsin U.S. Congressmen are demanding answers from a Wisconsin sheriff following a gruesome murder that was allegedly committed by an illegal migrant over the weekend.
Rep. Tom Tiffany, who represents Wisconsin’s 7th congressional district, and Rep. Derrick Van Orden (WI-03) requested information from Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett regarding the arrest of Alejandro Jose Coronel Zarate, an illegal immigrant and member of the notorious Venezuelan “Tren de Aragua” gang. Zarate was recently charged and arrested with domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse, according to the Prairie du Chien Police Department.
The representatives highlight that Zarate has been wanted on warrants out of Dane County, and also had previous warrants through Dane County for strangulation/suffocation, false imprisonment, battery, and disorderly conduct, but due to Dane County listing themselves as “non-cooperative” with federal immigration authorities as recently as June of this year by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Zarate was able to easier avoid being arrested by federal agents.
In the letter, Tiffany and Van Orden asked Sheriff Barrett questions such as, “Does Dane County still maintain a “non-cooperation” policy, or any other policy that in any way limits or restricts communication or coordination with ICE?” and “Did your agency, at any time, receive an immigration detainer request from ICE officials regarding Mr. Coronel Zarate?”
“These reckless and misguided “revolving door” policies are not only illegal; they also needlessly put other American communities at risk by allowing dangerous criminal aliens back out onto the streets to create new victims rather than remanding them to ICE for detention and removal. We hope that did not happen in this case,” Tiffany and Van Orden further stated in the letter.
Cases similar to Zarate’s have been reported across the country. A recent Daily Caller report focused on a case involving Daniel Hernandez-Martinez, a fellow member of the “Tren de Aragua” gang from Venezuela who was arrested in August but may still be able to stay in the U.S. despite being accused of committing at least 22 crimes in just six months in New York, including multiple assault cases, two of which are for allegedly attacking police officers, criminal possession of a weapon and petit larceny.
According to police sources who spoke with The New York Post last week, recent estimates state that up to 75% of those arrested in Midtown Manhattan in recent months for offenses like assault, robbery, and domestic abuse are illegal migrants with the percentage also being over 60% in several areas of Queens, New York.
