WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — The Wood County Sheriff’s Office has reported increased scam calls involving people pretending to be officers with the department.
According to a news release on Monday the callers claim that the recipient has an outstanding fine or warrant or another “legal matter” that requires urgent attention. They will then ask for financial information or payment over the phone to settle the matter.
Anyone who receives a call like this is asked to hang up and call the department directly to verify the information. This is true even if the caller ID shows the call originating from the Sheriff’s Department because that information can be spoofed.
Officers also remind residents they will never ask to settle a fine or forfeiture through gift cards or cryptocurrency.
