Sumitra Stolp
WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — There’s been another trial delay for the former Wausau-area woman accused of reckless homicide in connection with the death of her adopted daughter.
A two-week trial for Sumitra Stolp was canceled on Thursday. The trial was scheduled to begin on October 14th.
Stolp is accused of abusing her adopted daughter, who was rushed to a Wausau-area hospital with multiple injuries including broken bones and a skull fracture. Doctors said the girl also showed high levels of alcohol and Tylenol in her system.
The child was put in a medically-induced coma and died about a week later. Investigators say Sumitra Stolp and her then-husband Jonathan told different stories about how the girl was injured. Neither story aligned with the severity of the injuries.
Jonathan also faced charges but reached a plea deal with the state in 2023. He served a ten-month jail sentence and is currently on probation.
The 39-year-old was originally scheduled for trial last March. That was put off to October 14th to allow the court to evaluate the credibility and relevance of an expert witness. New trial dates are expected to be set in November, with the judge considering a two-week window next June or September.
