WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – A new report is highlighting internal Democratic concerns in the state of Wisconsin as polls show a key national race is continuing to tighten with election day only a month away.
According to Axios, Wisconsin U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin leads by just two points in internal Democratic polling, which is much closer than what national polls have shown in recent weeks for the race.
There are “alarm bells” sounding in the state, according to multiple Democratic sources who spoke with Axios. They claimed the race is far closer than public polls have indicated, mainly due to Republican candidates attempting to outspend Democrats in the state each week leading up to election day, with a recently estimated $20 million ad buy coming from GOP sources. One poll the source pointed directly to was the latest Marquette University poll that found Baldwin has a six-point lead in the state, but the sources explained that the race is “much closer than that.”
A recent analysis by AdImpact found that Democrats have spent over $100 million in Wisconsin this year, giving them a nearly $30 million overall spending edge over Republicans since January.
One sign that further points to internal Democratic concerns is that Sen. Baldwin has joined Vice President Harris for only one event since she took over the nomination in late July and notably didn’t attend Harris’ Fox Valley visit on Thursday, which the Baldwin campaign cites as a scheduling issue. Sen. Baldwin’s campaign also cited scheduling issues as the reason for not attending events with President Biden earlier this year.
The latest electoral map from Trafalgar and Insider Advantage shows former president Trump ahead of Harris in Wisconsin by just over one percentage point as well as being ahead by two percentage points in Michigan. Cook Political’s electoral map shows a similar trend, but with Harris up two over Trump and Baldwin ahead of Hovde by two points also.
