Javarius Hurd
MERRILL, WI (WSAU) — The teen accused of killing Lincoln Hills Correctional Officer Corey Proulx had another day of preliminary hearings to determine if the case against him will continue in adult court.
Javarius Hurd remains jailed on a $100,000 bond. Over the next few weeks, both sides will present their arguments about the case’s future course. Those briefs are due by October 31st, with rebuttals due two weeks later.
The court will decide if the case moves by December 6th.
Hurd is accused of attacking a female correctional officer by throwing a cup of soap in her face and then physically assaulting her. He fled to the outdoor recreation area, where Proulx tried to restrain him.
Security camera footage shows Hurd lashing out at Proulx, who fell and hit his head on a hard surface. He died a few hours later at a local hospital.
The 16-year-old faces one count of reckless homicide and two counts of battery by prisoners. He faces up to 72 years in prison if found guilty.
Investigators have also charged Hurd’s cellmate, Rian Nyblom, with battery by prisoners and a special count of felony murder. He’s accused of providing Hurd with the soap that he threw at the first officer.
Nyblom has pled not guilty. Further court action against him will be scheduled on December 12th.
