RIB MOUNTAIN, WI (WSAU) — It might seem like a small thing, but for residents of Rib Mountain, it’s another sign that their work towards incorporation paid off.
“Village of Rib Mountain” signs went up this week along two major highways. Village Administrator Gaylene Rhoden it took several discussions with the state Department of Transportation and a little help from the Marathon County Highway Department. “When you see those green signs along the highway, you know you’ve hit incorporation. Yes, [that day] has finally come.”
Rhoden shared photos taken by workers after they installed one of the signs along Interstate 39/US 51 North. Another one went in along Wisconsin 29 as well. She says she plans to double-check the location of the signs when she returns from a trip to Illinois this weekend.
Rib Mountain residents voted in favor of incorporation in July 2023. The Wisconsin Department of Administration signed off on the incorporation plan a few weeks later. Rhoden says even though they’ve had the certificates in hand for over a year, having those signs up still feels like a milestone. “It just shows the process, what we went through. [You can go back] over a year ago, and even back it up further from there. It was a two-year process. It takes time,” added Rhoden.
Leaders in Rib Mountain are also working to change the Village welcome signs, which still identify the community as a Town. Residents will have a say in that process through an informal straw poll at Village Hall. Those who cast an in-person, absentee ballot for the November 5th election can also place a sticker next to one of the handful of designs they like best. The Village Board will consider those “vote” totals before making a final decision.
Additionally, residents can pick up a “VILLAGE” sticker to place over the word “TOWN” on their six-digit address sign.
