CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) Election day is 8 days from today. Perhaps results will take another day or two to fully be processed, considering the way Philadelphia, Detroit, and Atlanta count their votes.
Which campaign has momentum in these final days?
Donald Trump speaks confidently in blue bastions, like his rally last night at Madison Square Garden in New York. Kamala Harris turns her drab political rallies into concerts, Springsteen in Georgia, Beyoncé in Texas. Even if I was a super-fan, they would have no sway over my vote.
Over the weekend, Hillary Clinton published an op-ed for CNN’s web site. It was titled: “Trump is a fascist; a clear and present danger to the country.” Hillary has still not recovered from her 2016 loss to Trump, on a night when she was too inebriated to give a concession speech. Hillary’s defeat was particularly bitter. You recall that on election day there was an open seat on the U.S. Supreme Court. Voters chose Trump anyway. If Trump is such a fascist, you will note that there were no concentration camps during his first term. He obeyed the many court rulings that went against him. His core goals: a border wall and the deportation of those who are in the country illegally, are still largely incomplete.
Michelle Obama, a woman who said she was never proud of her country until her husband was elected president, gave a speech over the weekend saying “we have every right to demand our [black] men vote for Harris.” Oh, really? Has she forgotten human nature that when someone “demands” something they are likely to get the opposite. Black men are no different than other voters, they’ll cast ballots based on their own self interests. Surely they must wonder why, after being in the country for centuries, that newcomers who cross the border illegally are gifted free iPhones, bus trips or flights to the interior, and free hotel stays.
The rhetoric eight days until election day tells us that Trump has momentum. What, if anything, can change that? If the election were held today the 45th president will also be the 47th.
