WASHINGTON D.C. (WSAU) -With election day less than 24 hours away, the U.S. Secret Service and businesses are for possible riots and violence in major cities across the country, including at candidates homes.
In the event that violence breaks out in the nation’s capital, as it did during previous elections and the George Floyd riots, the Secret Service has erected eight-foot-tall metal fences around the White House, Treasury Department, and surrounding areas of Lafayette Square, including Vice President Harris’ home in D.C., according to the Washington Post.
Additionally, the Secret Service has put up protection outside the convention center in West Palm Beach, Florida, where former president Donald Trump, the 2024 GOP presidential nominee, will host his election night watch party.
In a press release, the Secret Service has stated that while they haven’t received any creditable or specific threats, they will continue “working closely with federal, state, and local partners in Washington, DC, and Palm Beach County, Florida, to ensure heightened levels of Election Day safety and security.”
All 3,300 DC police officers are expected to work around the clock on Tuesday night, as well as 2,000 private personnel from Admiral Security Services who are expected to guard buildings near the White House and the Capitol.
During the George Floyd riots in 2020, the Foundation of Economic Education estimated that over $1 billion in property damages occurred, which was the most expensive riot in U.S. history, surpassing the Rodney King Los Angeles riots in 1992 that had a price tag of $775 million. Meanwhile, the damage cost for the riot on January 6th totaled just $2.73 million, according federal court filings.
