STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — A Stevens Point man is accused of possession of child pornography after investigators found multiple images on his devices.
Joseph Schaufenbuel is accused of searching for child porn images and other materials via Bing. An internet watchdog picked up on the activity and sent a tip to local police, who opened an investigation in October.
Digital breadcrumbs, including IP and email addresses, led them to the 66-year-old. Officers obtained a search warrant for his home and devices, which turned up nearly 150 images and other materials. He was taken into custody and made his first court appearance on October 11th. He was initially held on a $25,000 cash bond, which was reduced to $10,000 cash later in the month.
Schaufenbuel is free after posting the cash on Thursday. He will not be allowed to contact anyone under the age of 18 or access the Internet. He has also been ordered to turn over his passport if he has one.
Charges against him include five counts of possession of child pornography, which carry a maximum sentence of up to 75 years in prison. He is scheduled to enter a plea for the charges on December 16th. A scheduling conference is set for January 13th.
