WASHINGTON D.C. (WSAU) – President Biden announced Tuesday from the Rose Garden that a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah had been reached, bringing calm to the Middle East for the time being.
“I just spoke with the prime ministers of Israel and Lebanon. I’m pleased to announce that their governments have accepted the United States proposal to end the devastating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah,” and “what is left of Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations will not be allowed — and I emphasize, will not be allowed — to threaten the security of Israel again,” Biden said during his address.
He briefed members of President-elect Donald Trump’s staff on the changes, and “they seem to be supportive,” a senior Biden administration official told reporters during a press conference.
Lebanon’s health ministry, which does not differentiate between civilians and Hezbollah fighters in its statistics, reports that over 3,750 people have died and over a million have been displaced since the war began last fall.
In northern Israel and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, Hezbollah strikes have claimed the lives of forty-five civilians. According to Israeli sources, at least 73 Israeli soldiers have lost their lives in battle in southern Lebanon, the Golan Heights, and northern Israel.
