WASHINGTON D.C. (WSAU) – The U.S. Secret Service reportedly fired shots at thieves early Tuesday morning while they were attempting to break into vehicles outside of Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s home.
According to the New York Post, no one was injured in the incident, which occurred in Northwest Washington shortly after 1:30 a.m. ET. US Attorney Matthew Graves’ office will supervise the DC Metro Police Department’s investigation into the event.
At this time, Secret Service representatives haven’t responded to The Post’s request for comment.
Carjackings and vehicle thefts have been on the rise in D.C. and in other major U.S. cities in recent years, with the Department of Justice noting that compared to 2021, carjackings in Washington D.C. increased by approximately 63% as of mid-2024.
