CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – Sometimes I’m amazed when politicians are so off the rails that they focus on issues no one cares about.
Governor Tony Evers was on a clean-water tour of the state yesterday. One of his initiatives is new water fountains in schools. You’ve seen these models before. They have an extra spout at the top where you can fill up a water bottle. These new fountains have a better filtration system in case an older school building has lead pipes.
The new water fountains are noteworthy. The Biden Administration proposed retrofitting entire school buildings with old pipes. The cost was millions per building. Now that Biden is out of office we learn that the solution is better water fountains which cost a couple hundred bucks.
What I find amazing is that there is no one, no where who says “if only our generous Governor would come to town and give our school new water fountains.” The governor is the answer to a question that no one is asking. What people are asking is what’s being done to get people who are in the country illegally out. The Governor’s response to that is a promised veto that would require sheriffs departments in the state to cooperate with ICE when they arrest an illegal immigrant. ICE would have 48 hours to pick up the suspect, and the sheriffs department could apply for reimbursement for any expenses. Governor Evers says he’ll veto such a law, even though it hasn’t even been written yet.
Really? Why?
The Governor should immediately be asked about the case of Alejandro Zarate, who beat and sexually assaulted a woman and abused her in Prairie du Chien. A year earlier Zarate was arrested in Dane County, but he bailed out, only to commit more crime. Under the bill the Governor says is a “non starter”, Zarate would have been turned over to immigration authorities for deportation.
The next time a previously caught illegal immigrant goes on to commit more violent crime, that’s an “Evers Assault”. Even in Wisconsin’s liberal strongholds people will care much more about that then the shiny new water fountains in the schools.
