GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – The league’s top pass rusher, Myles Garrett, requested a trade away from the Cleveland Browns on Monday morning, and early indications point to the Green Bay Packers as one of the superstar’s top trade destination.
According to Eric Edholm of NFL Media and Jacob Camenker of USA Today, the Packers signing Garrett would feel similar to when the franchise signed Reggie White back in 1993 and would immediately solve the Packers’ defensive line problems. The move would also pair Garrett with Packers’ Pro Bowl defensive end Rashan Gary, who is in need of a proven fellow pass rusher to help him avoid double teams like he saw in 2024.
If the Browns were to consider trading Garrett seriously, the price tag could be a possible reason why Gutekunst could pass the star pass rusher, as Cleveland would likely require at least one first-round pick and multiple other high picks, trading or releasing cornerback Jaire Alexander to free up extra cap space and giving Garrett a brand-new contract, which would likely cost at least $35 million a year and over $123 million guaranteed at signing, putting him past 49ers’ superstar Nick Bosa.
Other teams that Edholm believes could also make an offer for Garrett include the Detroit Lions, Washington Commanders, and Los Angeles Chargers.
Despite turning 30 years old this year, Garret’s product hasn’t slowed down, recording 14 sacks in 17 games played in 2024 while leading all defensive players with a 92.7 overall grade from Pro Football Focus. Garret also posted a pass rush grade of 92.8, which was the highest in the league.
Gutekunst showed last offseason when he signed 2024 Pro Bowlers Xavier McKinney and Josh Jacobs that he isn’t afraid to make a splash move, and trading for Garrett would certainly be a career-defining move for the 51-year-old general manager that could be the difference that the Packers need to get back their first Super Bowl in 15 years.
