MARHSFIELD, WI (WSAU-WAOW) Technical jobs are in high demand all around central Wisconsin, and one area technical school is working to expand welding through a group of people who are often under-represented in the field.
Mid-State Technical College is working to shine the spotlight on women in the workforce. They have sixteen people in their welding program, and six of them are women.
In a field where less than ten percent of people are female, it’s something that makes instructor Jessie Jelinski proud. She says “As our society changes and our opinions change, women have the opportunity now to do these things. It’s really important that we have opportunities and programs like this so women can become exposed to something that they might not have otherwise thought about.”
And the women did have a chance to practice the job at the event, making a metal succulent plant to take home with them, and more importantly, getting a taste of those important skills.
This was the first Women in Welding event held by Mid-State, and they say that they hope to hold more events like this in the future.
