WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau Police are warning about a new text message scam circulating in the community.
Officers say the message appears to be from an international phone number encouraging you to pay overdue tolls. The language suggests urgency, and failure to pay could result in the recipient’s vehicle being impounded.
The message contains random emojis and a shortened URL. It also notes that timely payment will guarantee a “stress-free trip” and wishes you a “sunny day.” Officers say that language like that is a way scammers tip their hands. “Legitimate agencies don’t use casual language like ‘Wishing you a sunny day full of happiness.'”
If you believe you have unpaid tolls, you can always check your E-ZPass account online or call the company directly. Anyone who receives these messages is also encouraged to report them as spam and block the number through their text messaging app.
Once you’ve done that, officers say you should share the information with family and friends to keep them protected. “Scammers rely on fear and urgency to trick people. The more we share, the harder it is for them to succeed.”
