MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Five police officers from Ohio have been cleared of wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of a man near the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, WITI-TV reports.
The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office ruled that the officers were justified in shooting 43-year-old Samuel Sharpe last July 16. Officials said Sharpe had two knives and he was trying to attack another man.
Police released body camera footage last year that showed officers on bikes talking before one of them says, “He’s got a knife.”
Several officers then yell “Drop the knife!” as they run toward two men standing in a street. When the armed man moved toward the unarmed man, police fired their weapons.
The officers, from Columbus, were part of a 14-officer bicycle unit assigned to provide crowd control during the event.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
