MEDFORD, WI (WSAU) — A mining company says it plans to start drilling for gold and copper near Medford next week.
Green Light Wisconsin plans to start drilling on the so-called Bend deposit, located on U.S. Forest Service land. The deposit reportedly contains more than four million tons of copper and gold.
According to a news release issued earlier this week, Green Light has hired Minnesota-based Taconite Drilling LLC to drill at the site. Prep work will likely begin on Monday, and drilling could start by the middle of the week.
The action comes after a Taylor County Judge denied a request by the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa to halt state approval of the drilling. The tribe says it’s concerned about the impact of the drilling on environmental and historic sites.
“With Taconite engaged and our WDNR notice now filed, we are positioned to launch our maiden drill program at Bend and begin unlocking the potential we see in Wisconsin’s Penokean Volcanic Belt. Taconite’s regional expertise and proven track record in mineral exploration drilling make them an ideal partner for this important program. We look forward to testing our targets and uilding on the significant historical work completed to date,” said Green Light President and CEO Matt Filgate.
