WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Officials with Wausau Events and the city’s Police Department want you to be ready for some traffic congestion this weekend, especially in the city’s Southeast neighborhoods.
That’s where the municipal airport will host the annual Wings Over Wausau airshow. Parking on the event grounds will be reserved for handicapped access, with everyone else encouraged to park on the neighborhood streets or utilize shuttles.
Police will be directing traffic throughout the show. Those looking to exit via Lake View Drive will go south to Grand Avenue, and those heading towards Sturgeon Eddy Road will exit north to Grand Avenue.
Officers note the traffic flow in a Facebook video posted earlier this week:
Those who don’t want to fight traffic can utilize shuttles, which will run from local hotels into downtown Wausau and to the festival grounds.
The air show is also prompting some closures on and around Lake Wausau. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the boat landing and parking areas at Bluegill County Park will be closed starting at 6:00 AM on Friday, June 27, and will remain closed through the conclusion of the air show on Saturday evening.
The US Coast Guard will also be enforcing a temporary safety zone on the lake, meaning boat traffic will be prohibited between the area south of the Wausau Municipal Airport and near the Bluegill Bay Boat Landing. This will restrict boat travel between launch sites in Rothschild/Schofield and Wausau/Rib Mountain, including access to the Rib River.
