CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – A group of far-lefties, backed by Minocqua Brewing Company owner Kirk Bangstad, are planning to disrupt tomorrow’s Independence Day parade in Minoqua. One of the stated reasons is that our nation doesn’t deserve to celebrate its birthday because of Donald Trump’s economic policies.
That thinking is idiotic. America as a nation is not worthy of a celebration because of a president who was picked by a large majority of voters and won the electoral college by a wide margin?
There are also disturbing new polls about how Americans feel about our country. A Fox News survey says that only 58-percent of us are proud of our nation. Just 36-percent of Democrats are proud; and only 41-percent of independents. Among Gen-Z’ers, 6-out-of-10 are not proud of America.
For those who are in the ‘America stinks’ crowd, ask yourself where else would you rather live?
Consider some alternatives: Canada? You’ll pay a 17-percent additional tax on everything you earn to pay for your health care… where there are waiting lists for basic things like breast cancer screenings and hip replacements.
To the European Union? Places like France put limits on how many hours you can work – 30 hours a week. If you are willing to work extra for things you want, like a nicer car or a boat – you can’t. High earning pay taxes at 90-percent. But… enjoy the parks.
Germany? They’re debating a national ban on the use of automobiles on weekends, so powerful is their environmental lobby.
Somewhere in South America? You might have a very high standard of living, but the crime situation there is much different. Standard of living means nothing if a marauding gang ransacks your home. That happens, with alarming frequency, in that part of the world.
For those who doubt America’s greatness, let me remind you: this is the last-great place on Earth. No other nation anywhere has the freedom, the economy, and the opportunities for you to develop your full potential. The only limits on you are your own ambition. If you are a low-energy, do-as-little-as-possible kind of person, you’ll have a modest life, at best, in the United States. But if you are a go-getter who is filled with ambition for yourself, there is nowhere you’d rather be than here.
And if you and I disagree on the political issues of the day, in a few short years you’ll get to vote for the leaders of your choice. Sometimes the other side wins. That our politics are self-correcting is one of the things that makes America great.
So, if someone tells you that America isn’t great… tune them out. They’re lying to you.
