MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Multiple Sources are confirming that Democratic Governor Tony Evers will not seek a third term in the state’s highest office.
Evers made the announcement in a video on X, saying, “For the last six years, you have welcomed me into your Churches, businesses, classrooms, farms, hospitals, and communities. I have cherished every moment, every tour, visit, high-five, question, and selfie. It has been the honor of my life to give back to the state that raised me.”
He called the announcement his “love letter” to Wisconsin, adding that “the only thing I love more than being your governor is being a husband, a dad, and a grandpa. This is the best job I’ve ever had.”
The 73-year-old defeated incumbent Scott Walker in 2018, winning 49.5 percent of the vote. In 2022, he defeated Republican outsider Tim Michels, claiming 51% of the vote to secure a second term.
From 2009-2019, he served as the state’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, winning elections to the non-partisan seat in 2009, 2013, and 2017.
The move opens up the 2026 Governor’s race, which already has two declared Republican candidates: businessman Bill Berrien and Washington County Executive Josh Schoemann.
Others considering a run are said to include 7th Congressional District Congressman Tom Tiffany (R) and current Attorney General Josh Kaul (D).
