CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – The ACLU should be re-named. I propose the Non-American Civil Liberties Union. The N-ACLU has been very busy protecting what they claim are the rights of those who are in the country illegally.
In Wisconsin, the N-ACLU has taken aim at three county sheriffs who they claim are helping with ICE deportation efforts.
In Brown County, the sheriff will hold someone who is in the country illegally for $70-per-day. ICE has put a deposit on account with the sheriffs department there for $63,000.
In Sauk County, the sheriff gets a per-diem of $106-per-day for holding illegal immigrants until ICE picks them up.
The Ozaukee County sheriff offered ICE the ability to rent space in the county jail to house illegals who are awaiting deportation. The N-ACLU notes the ICE detainees are already being held in the Dodge County Jail.
There’s nothing unusual or exceptional about these arrangements. Local sheriffs are offering the same courtesy to ICE that they would offer to other law enforcement agencies. If you were arrested in Brown, Sauk, or Ozaukee county and another state – say Illinois or Michigan – notified them that you were wanted on a warrant there, you would not be released. You’d be held until that other jurisdiction comes to get you. So politicized is immigration policy that ICE is the only law enforcement agency were detention requests are ignored. Crazy-liberal Dane County even has a law that makes it illegal to cooperate with ICE.
What the American Civil Liberties Union forgets is that sheriffs are elected in Wisconsin. If the good citizens of Brown, Sauk and Ozaukee counties were so outraged that their sheriffs were cooperating with ICE, they could vote Todd Delain, Chip Meister, or Christy Knowles out of office. But residents there won’t. The voters know that each illegal immigrant held in their county’s jail, already facing a criminal charge, is one less illegal who is a threat to them.
