Doug Diny
WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau Mayor Doug Diny says he is ready to move on after the city’s Ethics Board announced its findings in the complaint against him.
“I’ve read the decision, and I certainly don’t agree with every conclusion they reached,” said Diny in a press release. “I am very pleased that the City of Wausau can now move on from this issue.”
The two-sentence statement was sent to the media roughly 90 minutes after the Board announced its decision, and was accompanied by a copy of the complete report. The eight-page document is attached to this story as a PDF, which you can find at the top of the page.

The report also gave some insight into why the board chose not to discipline the Mayor, instead compelling him to “conform his conduct to the requirements of the City of Wausau’s Ethics Code.”
According to the final footnote, the Board chose not to recommend punishment because “[They see] no cause consistent with the Declaration of Policy of the Ethics Board to further inflame the political tension surrounding this issue. The Ethics Board declines to impose a forfeiture in the range permitted by the Ethics Code, because such forfeiture would be merely symbolic and nominal in relation to the significant time and expense incurred by the Respondent and the City in this matter, and would do nothing to serve a punishment or deterrence purpose under the circumstances.”
The report adds that the board saw it appropriate to send a message that “this dramatic conduct of interfering with the City Clerk’s administration of elections will not be tolerated in the City of Wausau.” They also acknowledged the ongoing DOJ investigation into the matter, which could bring additional action.
