WAUTOMA, WI (WSAU) — A death investigation is underway in the Waushara County Town of Wautoma after a domestic violence call led to a standoff.
Officers were called to a home near State Highway 73 and County Road O on Thursday evening, where they were met by a man who retreated into the home and fired a gun at them. The suspect then barricaded himself in the home.
Additional teams were called in from Portage County, and officers attempted to negotiate with the man. Eventually, they heard a gunshot, then silence from the home. When they entered, they found the man deceased.
No further information has been released. The Wisconsin Department of Justice- Division of Criminal Investigation will lead the investigation.
The incident closed a portion of Highway 73 in both directions for about six hours on Thursday, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
