Bennet Schmitz
WESTON, WI (WSAU) — An employee at the Greenheck Turner Community Center has been accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a minor, according to a statement from D.C. Everest School Superintendent Casey Nye.
Bennet Schmitz was arrested in Greenfield on Monday, accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a minor in that community. As soon as his supervisors at the GTCC were notified, the district deactivated his key cards and electronics and placed him on leave with specific instructions to stay off district property, according to Nye.
Officials emphasized that the 23-year-old was not a licensed educator and did not have a teaching role with the district, adding that he passed all criminal background checks before he was hired as a recreation coordinator with the Community Center.
Additionally, the charges do not stem from an incident involving a D.C. Everest Student. According to a joint press release from the Greenfield School District and Police Department, a student in their district recently “shared concerns with a trusted school staff member who promptly reported the matter.”
Schmitz served as an assistant track coach for the district from 2022-’24 and was not a licensed educator with the district, the release adds.
Officials in Greenfield add that at this time, they are only aware of one such incident. They also noted that he passed a criminal background check before being hired.
Court records show Schmitz faces felony counts for child enticement and child sexual assault in Milwaukee County. An initial appearance is scheduled for October 28th.
