UPDATE (WSAU) – The Wausau School Board voted on Monday night to stay with a plan to resume in-person instruction.
The board voted 5-4 to keep with a November 2 re-opening date, despite rising COVID cases. Wausau is the only district in the area that has not opened for in-person learning.
K-5 students will go to class for a full school day. Middle and high school students will be divided into groups, with students getting in-person instruction on alternating days, and online instruction for other days.
Social distancing and mask-use will be mandatory.
Also at Monday’s meeting, Jeff Leigh, a former school board president, was picked to fill out the term of Theresa Miles, who resigned last summer because of health concerns. He will serve the remainder of her term, which runs through April, 2021.

WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – The Wausau School District, the only school system in Central Wisconsin that has not re-opened for in-person instruction, will reconsider its proposed November 2 start date tonight.
When the board proposed a school re-opening date, they promised to review their plan at their October 12 meeting. The board said its decisions are subject to change based on the evolving situation with COVID-19.
Since then the number of Coronavirus cases has continued to climb in Central Wisconsin, and Governor Tony Evers has issued a new emergency order restricting most buildings to 25% capacity. Schools are exempt.
Under the re-opening proposal, students grades K-5 would return to class full time. Students in middle school and high school would be divided into groups, attending class in-person on alternating days. The school would offer online-only learning for students and families who have concerns about returned to class in-person.
The school board voted 5-3 in favor of the reopening plan, after dealing 4-4 at its previous meeting.
Also tonight the school board is likely to name a replacement for Theresa Miles, who resigned in August because of health problems. 13 people applied to fill the vacancy. The school board has narrowed that list to 4 finalists.
