WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau man accused of starting a fire in his garage earlier this year will go to trial in early 2026, though both sides will continue to work out a plea deal.
Investigators say David Oldenburg Jr. is accused of starting the fire in mid-February despite previous warnings about burning in the building. The 57-year-old initially told first responders he had stepped outside for a cigarette before the flames started, but later admitted that he set the fire in a wood stove. First responders discovered methamphetamine in his possession as they were responding to the incident.
Oldenburg now faces felony charges for recklessly endangering safety and possession of meth, along with misdemeanor counts of obstructing an officer, negligent handling of burning materials, and bail jumping.

He is also facing misdemeanor charges for retail theft in an unrelated case, which has been cross-referenced with the. All charges carry repeat modifiers, which could mean additional prison time if he’s convicted.
Further court action is scheduled for January 12th ahead of a scheduled two-day trial on February 8th and 9th. Though court records indicate that both sides will continue to negotiate a plea deal. Oldenburg is free on a $1,400 signature bond.
