SOMERSET TOWNSHIP. WI (WSAU-WAOW) – A cold case in St. Croix County has resurfaced after new details have been discovered.
In October of 2002, human remains including a skull were found at the Fred C. Anderson Boy Scout Camp in Somerset Township. For almost two decades, the Sheriff’s Office investigated leads and used scientific techniques to identify the remains.
In February 2021, the Sheriff’s office teamed up with the DNA Doe Project to help using DNA and genetic genealogy. They were able to identify the body as Alyce C. Peterson of Stillwater, Minnesota. She died July of 2001 at the age of 91 from natural causes at a Minnesota hospital. Investigators had been working to determine what happened with Peterson’s remains following her death.
On December 17th of this year, the St. Croix County District Attorney’s office issued criminal charges against Benjamin Carl Hanson (57) of Bayport, Minnesota for hiding a corpse and felony theft.
According to the Sheriff’s office, Hanson was identified as a former employee of a local funeral home that provided funeral arrangements for Alyce Peterson.
