WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A standing-room-only crowd gathered at the Wausau Water treatment plant for a public input session on the future use of city-owned property at 1300 Cleveland Avenue.
Representatives from the Public Works and Economic Development Departments presented multiple options, including single and multi-family housing, recreational space, and some services. Residents then had a chance to rate those options, data that will be compiled and digested by the Economic Development Department. “That’s the direction we got from our Economic Development Committee, and that’s what we went through [tonight;] from active and passive parks to residential and commercial. There are a lot of different options available and I’m really interested to see the results.”
Attendees were asked to rate each option on a scale of 1-6. Those options included single and multi-family housing, daycare facilities, pet kennels, and parks.
While the meeting focused on the future use of the land, many residents couldn’t resist asking about the status of environmental remediation at the site. Fifrick says his staff is working alongside the Public Works department on that, because the future use will determine the level of remediation required. “Public Works and the DNR have been very involved in the process, and unfortunately, it’s a long process. There is a lot of work that goes into it and this is another step in that process. We will keep moving forward, one [foot] in front of the other,” said Fifrick.
The future use survey remains open through the end of February. Digital copies can be filled out at the city’s website; those who prefer a hard copy can request one at City Hall.
