David Schmies
STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — A five-day trial for a Stevens Point man accused of child abuse will not begin this week as previously scheduled.
David Schmies was scheduled for trial to begin today, but court records show it was adjourned late last week. The week-long trial will now run from June 1st to 5th.
The 26-year-old is accused of causing serious injuries to a three-month-old child in 2022. He told doctors that the child had fallen off a bed, but they noted the injuries were likely caused by much more serious trauma. Those included broken bones that were in various stages of healing and bleeding on the brain, injuries that are consistent with abuse.
Court records show both sides are working on a revised witness list and admissible evidence for the trial. Paperwork regarding the evidence is due back to the court later this month, with a motion hearing scheduled for March 12th.
Schmies faces up to 60 years in the state prison system if found guilty at trial.
