WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Marathon County Historical Society is marking a construction milestone for its new John & Carolyn Sonnentag Archive Center.
Over the past few weeks, crews have battled sub-zero temperatures to place columns, beams, and walls into a precast concrete structure. Those passing by can now see the bones of what will become a state-of-the-art facility designed to preserve Marathon County’s historic artifacts and archival collections for generations.

Once the structure is enclosed, crews will begin working on the upper floors of the facility, moving to the ground floors later in the spring and summer.
The gray exterior will then be covered with brick, stone, architectural cast elements, windows, and detailed facade treatments.
“This building may look like a construction site today, but what we are seeing rise from the ground is the foundation for decades of preservation, research, and community engagement,” said MCHS Executive Director Blake Opal- Wahoske. “This facility will anchor the future of downtown Wausau while safeguarding its past.”
Plans for the project were announced in the summer of 2024, with a ceremonial groundbreaking in August 2025. The project is on track for a mid-September completion date.
