Cougar on trail-cam in Weston, WI
FRIENDSHIP, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – A cougar that was seen on a trail-cam in Weston earlier this month was found dead in Adams County. The animal had been struck by a train, and was reported by railroad crews on February 9th.
The DNR plans to conduct a necropsy to gather more information.
The young male cougar was collared in western Nebraska in December 2024 at about 1 year old. Despite its collar not transmitting data for months, the cougar was photographed multiple times on its journey. It was spotted in Duluth in early December. It was sighted twice in Marathon County on January 28, in Portage County on January 31 and February 3, and in Adams County on February 4.
“This represents a classic case of a young male cougar that leaves its natal range and disperses out in search of a mate,” Randy Johnson, DNR large carnivore specialist, said.
