CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – You might ask yourself what does the British royal family have to do with faith? I think, a lot.
Consider the arrest yesterday of former-prince Andrew. He had unimaginable wealth and had royal title. Literally, the world was his oyster. And he squandered it through personal indulgence and debauchery. The only thing he will be remembered as is a sexual deviant.
Consider for a moment Prince Harry and his wife, Megan Markle. They’ve devoted their lives to self-promotion and fitting in with the Hollywood-celebrity crowd. They contribute nothing.
This stands in stark contrast to the late Princess Diana. And, yes, she was a fallen women who cheated on her husband. Her husband was also unfaithful to her. Yet I am reminded that we all fall short; we all sin. And yet Diana’s two favored charities were the finding and removing of land mines left behind after wars were ended, and her work for children and babies with AIDS. And as a member of British royalty, the causes she supported immediately received attention. Seeing a princess hold and comfort a baby dying from AIDS sturred public consciousness. She used her title and privilege for good.
And that’s what I’d like to ask you as we come to the first Sunday of Lent. What about you? Is your existence about moving from one pleasure to another, signifying nothing? Or is a small part of your life devoted to a higher purpose? What are you doing for the good of others?
Remember, Jesus said “to whom much is given, much is required.” You’ll find whatever you do to help others is also a tremendous blessing that you give… to yourself.
