MILAN, ITALY (WSAU) — The United States beat Canada 2-1 in overtime to claim their first Olympic gold medal in mens hockey since 1980.
Jack Hughes scored the game-winner 1:41 into the overtime period. Matt Boldy had given the US a 1-0 lead in the first period and the team made it stand up until Cale Makar tied it for the Canadians at the 18:16 mark of the second.
Zach Werenski and goalie Connor Hellebuyck assisted on the game winning goal.
Team Canada dominated the contest, especially in the 3rd period but Hellebuyck kept the Americans alive with an incredible goal-tending exhibition. He had 42 saves in the game including a few of the amazing variety.
It’s the 3rd goal medal for the US in Olympic history and the first one involving NHL players.
