CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – That collective gasp you heard from the political left is that ICE is now operating in Wisconsin. ICE agents made four arrests last week in Eau Claire County.
In case you missed the story, here’s what happened: ICE agents notified the sheriffs department that they had a warrant to arrest a man for assaulting a law enforcement officer. The suspect had been tracked to a construction site in Altoona. The subject and three other illegal immigrants at the site tried to flee. One was arrested, three others took off in a car.
The three fugitives drove into the Town of Washington. They forced their way into a home there, and barricaded themselves in an attached garage. The homeowner locked them in the garage and called 911. After a standoff the three were arrested.
While local law enforcement were informed, the sheriffs department was not involved in any of the arrests. None of the suspects were held in the Eau Claire County jail. They were held on immigration charges and were taken to an ICE detention facility. Their names have not been released.
To those who are opposed to all ICE activity, explain to me what’s the problem here?
None of the four suspects were in the country legally. One assaulted a police officer, which moved him up on the apprehension list. Three others tried to help him escape and were involved in a home invasion. This is the type of lawlessness that shouldn’t be tolerated. Spare me that they were workers, trying to scratch out a living in a strange land. They are criminals. They’ve been caught. They will, and should be, removed from our country.
