CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) There are dozens of democrats who will boycott tonight’s State of the Union address.
Among them, Illinois Congressman Eric Sorensen, who says “because I already know the state of our union. Families across Illinois are hurting. Neighbors are being scared of ICE violence. Farmers are going bankrupt. Costs are too high, and this administration is failing to deliver an economy that works for the middle. Instead of playing politics, I will devote the day to working to lower costs, providing real results, and staying true to the people I serve.”
Well, Congressman Serensen. That begs a few questions. Would you have boycorred Joe Biden’s State of the Union address in 2022? Inflation then was 11%; today it is 2.4%. But the mainstream media and your democratic party hadn’t latched onto affordability as a poll-tested issue then. Instead your fellow democrats showed up on Capitol Hill and clapped like well-trained seals. Would you have boycotted Barak Obama’s 2013 State of the Union. That year he deported 435,000 illegals, twice as many as Trump has removed in the past year.
No, a State of the Union boycott is political theater; nothing more.
And for those who wish for the county to return to political norms and civility, it was a Democrat speaker, Nancy Pelosi, who introduced Donald Trump disrespectfully in 2020 and then tore up his speech at the end of the night.
I get it. Democrats still think the country went crazy in putting Donald Trump back in the White House. In fact, it is they who were crazy in trying to sneak sleepy Joe Biden in for another term and then offering Kamala Harris as an alternative.
But who occupies the Oval Office is secondary. Will the office be respected? Or will we descend into Britain’s House of Commons, where the prime minister is jeered by their opponents each time they speak? That’s not a part of American politics, but here we are.
