WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Almost a week after record breaking snowfall here in central Wisconsin, warm temperatures are melting snow and creating new issues on the road.
“If this much snow was on the street in the middle of winter it would normally take three weeks. Obviously, mother nature is doing her part. This isn’t going to take three weeks, it’s going to look way different a week from now,” says Kevin Koester, City of Wausau Department of Public Works Supervisor.
However, the crew continues to remove snow for many reasons.
“And the reason why we’re doing it is public safety. And some of the snow banks are so high, traffic can’t see around corners, narrow lanes and all that,” says Koester.
Also adding that because of the heavy snowfall, snow on the street was pilled onto sidewalks so that cars can go through.
“Pedestrians, they can’t walk on the sidewalks, we have to get these cleared. By the end of tonight Grand Avenue should just be about done,” says Koester.
He adds that they have crews out 24/7 working to remove the snow before it creates more damages to the city.
“If you can’ t tell by today, the potholes are opening up. The reason they’re doing that is because of the water. We need to get this snow and the water off that road as fast as we can,” says Koester.
Extending his thanks to his team.
“And the guys did an amazing job. They did excellent. Each and every one of them, my hats off for each and everyone of them.”
They also ask for drivers to give plenty of space to plow crews as they work to remove snow and help open sidewalks, keeping pedestrians safe and protecting roads from further ruins.
