MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) — The two candidates vying for a ten-year term on the Wisconsin Supreme Court will not meet tonight for a televised debate after Judge Chris Taylor came down with a case of kidney stones just hours before the event.
Judge Taylor and Appeals Court Judges Maria Lazar were scheduled to debate at the Marquette Law School at 7 PM. But Taylor announced she would be pulling out of the event at noon today, saying she woke up feeling ill.
Her campaign released a statement at noon, saying she would not participate at the reccomendation of her medical team. A few hours later she confirmed that the diagnosis, saying she would be taking the next couple of days to rest and recover before embarking on a statewide tour to “meet voters from across Wisconsin.
“We are committed to rescheduling today’s debate next week on a date that works for WISN, debate partners, and our opponent’s campaign. We appreciate everyone who has reached out to wish Judge Taylor well and we’re looking forward to a quick recovery,” the statement adds.
While the race is officially non-partisan, Taylor has the backing of liberals, and Lazar is the favorite of conservatives.
The winner of the April 7th election replaces Rebecca Bradley, who chose not to seek re-election this year.
The Supreme Court election is held alongside other local, non-partisan elections.
