CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – Khary Payton is a fine actor. He appeared for six seasons on The Walking Dead and had a recurring role on General Hospital.
Robert Fentress is certainly an outstanding director. He directed Arnold Schwarzenegger, one of the worst actors ever, in Total Recall.
I doubt that Payton or Fentress have ever been to Wausau. They know nothing about our community. They’d have a hard time finding us on a map. Yet they have an interest in Wausau’s city council races, and are spending money to influence the outcomes one week from today.
Payton and Fentress are donors to a political action group SLEA, or State and Local Elections Alliance. Six Hollywood actors and directors are on the PACs donors list. Their mission: to gain control of local elections in swing districts.
So far SLEA has spent $44,000 on four city council races, with all the money going to liberal big spenders. They’ve funded glossy mailers, and have their phone bank calling local voters. (The phone bank is rich… hired, friendly sounding college kids are making phone calls from parts unknown, perhaps Lincoln, Nebraska telling Wausonians who to vote for. If you get one of these calls, ask the squeaky clean caller this question: “Have you ever been to the Hiawatha?” If they have no idea what you’re talking about, ask them who they heck they are telling you who to vote for.)
Some of the SLEA money has gone to City Council President Lisa Rasmussen. I personally like Lisa, but she’s part of the big spending crowd at city hall. SLEA’s mailer caller her “the affordability candidate.” Guhfaw!
What’s SLEA’s goal. Probably, but not certainly, to get Katie Rosenberg back into office. She could certainly run for mayor again in 2028. She’s already back on the police and fire commission and hopes to become a county board supervisor. Liberals still haven’t given up on Katie as, someday, a state senator or, perhaps, a congresswoman.
What’s sad about this? Regular-Joe-Anybody used to be able to run for a seat on the Wausau City Council. You’d rise and fall based on front porch campaigning. $44,000 speaks loudly for a council seat that covers just a few neighborhoods in town. If you get one of SLEA’s mailers or phone calls, remember, people who know nothing about our community are trying to shape your vote. That’s not a good thing.
