STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The city of Stevens Point will be busy from April 17th-19th when Trivia Weekend takes over.
Mayor Mike Wiza says for many businesses, this weekend is another holiday. That includes local grocery stores and restaurants. Wiza says in the past, those managers have told him that trivia weekend is right up there with the Super Bowl or any other event that centers on food. “Put that into perceive. All the hype around the Super Bowl and buying the snacks. That’s massive. I know people have figured out [the economic impact]. I used to know that number, but I don’t know what it is anymore.”
He says you have to think of it as any other multi-day event, like a sports tournament or convention. “It brings in hundreds of dollars per family every day we have it. And we’re on for three days.”
Wiza, who has been playing Trivia for decades, also shared memories of family gatherings for trivia, including how his mother used to make a large batch of potato salad for each event. “I swear to God it was like a five-gallon bucket, but in this very special 1960s Tupperware bowl that I have not seen the likes of outside of her kitchen.”
His uncles were in charge of making breakfast each day as well. He says that while they and his mother have since passed away, others have picked up those responsibilities, including his sisters, who are now on potato salad duty. “It’s close, but it’s not mom’s.
“Those trivia traditions change a bit over time. But the meat and potatoes of trivia are the relationships you build over the years, the memories that you make, and sharing the experience, whether you place 5th or 50th,” added Wiza.
