STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Portage County Sheriff Mike Lucas has announced that he won’t run for another four-year term.
The longtime Sheriff made the announcement on Monday in a letter to the public, saying, “With careful consideration and gratitude for the trust you have shown in me, I am announcing that I won’t seek a fourth term as your Sheriff.”
Lucas says he feels now is the time to step aside and let new leadership take over, adding that his 32 years of service to Portage County and 12-year run as Sheriff has been “the most rewarding expierence of my life.”
In his letter, Lucas also endorsed Captain Joshua Ostrowski as the next Sheriff. “Captain Ostrowski has been my Under Sheriff and has a firm grip on the jail/sheriff’s office project. He has also taken it upon himself to learn all aspects of the Sheriff’s Office.”
Lucas also praised the officers and other employees, saying he is proud of every member of the department.
Lucas won his most recent four-year term in November 2022, defeating Scott Kenneth Noble. The next election is this November.
