WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau Mayor Doug Diny will recommend a restructuring of the current City Council committee structure during Tuesday’s organizational meeting.
In a statement released Sunday night, Mayor Diny said, “The current system with six standing committees has become redundant, inefficient, and unnecessarily burdensome for both city staff and council members,” said Mayor Diny. “After watching and participating in this structure for the last four years, I have concluded it’s time for a change. I am recommending we move to a more streamlined four-committee model.”
Diny did not clarify which of the six committees would be eliminated or merged. Current committees include Finance, Public Health and Safety, Economic Development, Parks and Recreation, Infrastructure and Facilities, and Human Resources.
All committees meet once a month except the Finance Committee, which meets before each regularly scheduled Council meeting.
The Council also recently established an Executive Committee, composed of the six chairs of the other committees. However, those meetings have been sparse.
Tuesday’s meeting will include the swearing in of the new Council and the selection of a Council President. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30, with Diny saying he will have more information on the proposed committee structure at that time.
