WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A site selection team was in Wausau last week to analyze more than 70 acres of developable land in the industrial park for future development.
Mayor Doug Diny and Community Development Director Randy Fifrick joined the group for a walk-through, highlighting the infrastructure investments the city has made in the area and selling the group on Wausau’s housing and quality-of-life amenities. Diny says those are all key data points for any business looking to invest in the city.
“They look at things like housing, transportation [to the site,] electric, gas, sewer, and water,” said Diny. “[They want to know] what we can support out there, so they know what kind of portfolio they can bring to us.”
From there, the firm will be able to pitch the site to companies that are looking to expand. He says the goal is to bring in jobs and drive economic growth for the city. “Jobs drive everything downstream, from housing to restaurants to entertainment. And more jobs mean more tax base.
“You’ll start to see some more marketing on that as they put together that package,” added Diny.
The group will digest that information and give the city a recommendation on what industry could be best suited for the site. Diny notes that as of today, no group has expressed a formal interest in the site.
Wausau is one of eight Midwest locations being analyzed.
