CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – Would you take this bet? I bet you that between now and the 60-days of negotiations with Iran, that there will be U.S. military engagement.
You’d be a fool to bet against me.
Consider what’s happened since the 60-day clock started ticking last Wednesday.
Talks that were supposed to begin last Friday were canceled for “technical reasons.” The actual reason was that Iran’s delegation arrived late, on purpose.
We were told Iran would not negotiate until there was a cease fire in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah. Five Israeli soldiers have been killed in Lebanon since then. A secret tunnel filled with Hezbollah rockets has been discovered.
On Saturday, Iran re-closed the Strait of Hormuz, one day after the U.S. blockage of Iranian ports was lifted.
On Sunday, the first day of face-to-face talks with the Iranians in Switzerland, the Iranian delegation walked out.
And somehow in the next 60 days we are supposed to reach an agreement with these people where they voluntarily degrade their nuclear material and have their nuclear equipment removed from the country. Only a fool would believe that will happen.
And the entire success or failure of this enterprise is a de-nuclearized Iran. The Strait of Hormuz or regime change are all secondary. And what we have seen over the last five days is that our negotiating partners are not serious people. They have no intention of agreeing to anything. And any agreement that they reach won’t be followed.
Donald Trump is right to keep all military options on the table. Over the past few days, I’m certain it will be nesessary.
