WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – Marathon County health officials are advising citizens to stay cool and take precautions to stay healthy during the excessive heat forecast to hit north-central Wisconsin over the next 48 hours.
According to a press release from Public Health Educator Morgan Romenesko, with the National Weather Service forecasting extreme heat from June 29th at 12:00 pm to June 30th at 7:00 pm, the Marathon County Health Department advises residents to take precautions to avoid heat-related illness. While anybody might be affected, the most vulnerable include elderly persons, people with chronic health concerns, children, athletes, and outdoor laborers.
Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are two common heat-related diseases. Symptoms may include fainting, rash, tiredness, nausea, and chilly, moist skin. If you encounter heat-related problems, it’s important to promptly cool down. Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition that requires rapid medical intervention. If you are experiencing heat stroke symptoms, call 911.
Officials encourage households to seek air conditioning. During regular business hours, Marathon County Public Library branches serve as cooling centers for those looking to stay cool while checking on neighbors, elderly individuals, or those in need of assistance obtaining air conditioning.
Keep up with the Marathon County Health Department’s Facebook posts for updates, and call United Way’s 2-1-1 hotline for more cooling center locations and hours.
